The Sahara Desert

Beyond the High Atlas, the landscape opens into stony plains, palm oases and finally the towering dunes of the Sahara.

A camel caravan crossing the desert near Merzouga

Morocco’s great dune fields lie in the south-east, many hours from Marrakech. The journey crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass and passes kasbahs, ksour and valleys — which is why we recommend allowing at least three days.

We plan driving days carefully, choose a desert camp that suits you and include the stops that make the route memorable.

Highlights

  • The dunes

Sunrise and sunset over the sand.

  • Aït Benhaddou

A UNESCO-listed earthen ksar on the way south.

  • Southern valleys

    Gorges, palm groves and kasbahs.

  • Desert nights

Clear, starry skies far from city lights.

Suggested experiences

Practical considerations

  • Allow at least three days from Marrakech.
  • Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons.
  • Winter nights in the desert can be very cold.
