Marrakech, the Red City

Historic palaces, colourful souks, hidden gardens and the electric energy of Jemaa el-Fnaa — Marrakech is where most Moroccan journeys begin.

Jemaa el-Fnaa square in Marrakech at the end of the day

Founded in the 11th century, Marrakech grew into one of Morocco’s great imperial cities. Its historic Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a maze of lanes where craft workshops, mosques, riads and markets sit side by side.

Beyond the Medina, the city reveals quieter faces: gardens, contemporary galleries, rooftop terraces and modern neighbourhoods. It is also the natural base for day trips to the Atlas, Agafay and the coast.

Highlights

  • Bahia & El Badi Palaces

Two very different palaces: one richly decorated, one monumental and romantic in its ruins.

  • Souks & artisans

Leather, brass, wood, textiles and spices, often made in workshops just behind the stalls.

  • Jardin Majorelle & Le Jardin Secret

Gardens that offer calm, shade and some of the city’s most photographed colours.

  • Jemaa el-Fnaa

Storytellers, musicians and food stalls in a square that changes character through the day.
